What sets them apart is that the decisive piece of information is not on the key, not in the glovebox, and not printed on any document you were handed at purchase. It sits inside a control module, and whether a given shop can get at it is most of the difference between a routine appointment and a referral to the dealer.

The steering lock trap

This section exists because it is the single most expensive misdiagnosis on these vehicles.

Push-button Nissan and Infiniti models use an electronic steering column lock: a motorised unit that releases the steering wheel when the vehicle authorises the start. When that unit fails, the symptoms look exactly like a dead key. The wheel stays locked, the vehicle will not start, and a warning appears on the display.
