Is It the Key or the Ignition? Diagnose Before You Buy a New Key

The wrong diagnosis here costs you a key you did not need — and the car still will not start.

The most expensive mistake in car key work is not overpaying for a key. It is buying a key you did not need, discovering the car still will not start, and then paying again for the actual repair.

It happens constantly, because a failing ignition cylinder, a dying fob battery, a damaged antenna ring and a genuinely failed key all present to the driver as the same thing: my key is not working. Start here: the one test that resolves most cases

Try the spare key.

  • Spare works normally → the problem is the first key. A new one is the answer.
  • Spare behaves identically → the problem is the vehicle. Another key will not fix it.

The bolded row is the one to memorise. Start-then-die is the immobilizer signature, and it is the single most reliable indicator that you have a key or security problem rather than a mechanical one.

Why start-then-die means what it does

Modern vehicles will not run without an authorized key. Engine immobilizers became effectively universal equipment after the federal theft-prevention framework pushed the industry that way [1], and their effect on theft rates for equipped vehicles is well documented [2].

The mechanism explains the symptom. The starter, fuel system and ignition system are allowed to do their jobs — so the engine actually fires. A moment later the security module reports that it did not receive a valid credential, and fuel or spark is cut. The car starts, then dies, reliably, every time, within a couple of seconds.

If your vehicle does this, three things are worth checking before concluding the key is dead:

  1. Is anything else on the ring interfering? A second transponder key or a heavy keychain sitting against the ignition can confuse the reader on some vehicles. Try the key alone, nothing else attached.
  2. Has anything happened to the steering column recently? The antenna ring that reads the chip wraps around the ignition cylinder. Column work, a recent theft attempt, or water intrusion can damage it — and then a perfectly good key stops being read.
  3. Is the battery weak? Low system voltage produces genuinely strange security behaviour on some platforms. Rule it out before buying anything.

"The key will not turn" — the free checks first

This is the symptom most likely to end in an unnecessary purchase, because three of its four common causes cost nothing to resolve.

1. The steering lock is bound. If the wheel was turned when you parked, the lock pin can be under load against the column, and the key physically cannot rotate. Fix: rock the steering wheel gently left and right with light pressure on the key. Do not force either one. This resolves an enormous share of cases.

2. The vehicle is not fully in park. Automatic transmissions interlock the ignition with the shifter position. A selector resting a millimetre short of park will stop the key turning. Fix: push the shifter firmly into park, then try again.

3. The key is worn. Years of use round the peaks and valleys of the blade until it no longer lifts the wafers to the correct heights. Symptom: it works if you wiggle it, or works in the doors but not the ignition. Fix: a key cut fresh from the vehicle's key code — not a copy of the worn one, which reproduces the wear.

4. The cylinder is worn or seized. The wafers and springs inside wear too, and eventually a correct key will not operate them. This is genuine hardware work and it is standard automotive locksmith territory.

Note the ordering. Options one and two are free. Option three is inexpensive. Only option four is a repair — and it is a repair that a new key alone would not have solved.

Push-button vehicles: the fob-battery trap

On a proximity vehicle the failure looks dramatic and is usually trivial. The fob's coin cell dies, the car cannot detect a key at all, and the dashboard says so in language that sounds like something is broken.

Work in this order:

  1. Replace the coin cell. A few dollars, two minutes. Spent cells belong in household battery recycling rather than the bin [4].
  2. Use the backup start procedure. Nearly every push-button vehicle has one: a slot for the fob, a marked spot on the steering column, or a hold-the-fob-against-the-start-button routine. It is in the owner manual. If the car starts this way, you have confirmed the fault is the fob's radio or battery, not the vehicle.
  3. Try the second fob. Same logic as the spare-key test.
  4. Only then consider that the fob or the vehicle's receiver has actually failed.

The faults that are definitely not a key problem

Save yourself a call to the wrong trade. None of these are key issues:

  • Nothing at all when you turn the key — no lights, no click, no crank. That is electrical supply: battery, terminals, or the ignition switch behind the cylinder.
  • A rapid clicking when you turn it. Classic low battery or starter draw.
  • Cranks strongly but never fires, with no security warning. Fuel, spark or compression — a mechanic.
  • Starts and runs perfectly, but the remote buttons do nothing. The immobilizer is fine; the remote-entry radio is the issue. Cheaper problem, different part.
  • Runs fine but the dash security light stays lit while driving. Usually a stored fault to be read, not an immediate key failure.

Where the two trades divide

An automotive locksmith owns the mechanical lock and the security-credential chain: cylinders, keys, transponders, fobs, and on many platforms the immobilizer programming itself. A mechanic owns everything electrical and mechanical downstream of that.

The awkward middle is the ignition assembly, because it is two parts stacked together — the lock cylinder your key enters, and the electrical switch behind it. Cylinder faults are locksmith work. Switch faults usually are not. Many shops handle both; many do not; and the way to find out is to describe the symptom rather than name the part.   1. What you do to start it: turn a metal key, insert a fob and twist, or press a button.
  2. What the vehicle does: nothing, cranks and does not fire, or starts and dies.
  3. What the dashboard shows: a security or key icon, or nothing unusual.
  4. Whether a second key exists and how it behaves.
  5. Year, make, model and VIN.
