Keys for Classic and Older Cars: When the Problem Is Metal, Not Electronics

Older cars invert the usual problem: no software, but the blank may no longer exist.

Almost everything written about car keys in the last decade concerns electronics: chips, credentials, security access, programming equipment. Point any of it at a car built before immobilizers and it becomes irrelevant, because there is nothing to programme.

That does not make the key easy. It moves the difficulty somewhere else — into blanks that may no longer be manufactured, locks worn by decades of use, and a set of mechanical skills that fewer shops practise every year. As of August 2026, here is how key work on older vehicles actually goes.

Where the dividing line sits

The boundary is not a model year, and it is not the word classic. It is whether the vehicle has an engine immobilizer.

Without one, the key is a piece of shaped metal. It has to fit the lock and turn it, and that is the entire specification. With one, the key also has to carry a credential the vehicle recognises, which requires programming equipment and, on newer vehicles, manufacturer-side access.

That means two cars from the same era can sit on opposite sides of the line depending on trim, market and how late in the production run they were built. The blank is the constraint

On modern vehicles, the expensive part is the electronics. On older ones, it is often simply finding metal in the right shape.

Blanks for high-volume domestic cars of the 1960s through 1980s are generally well served, both by remaining old stock and by reproduction manufacturing aimed at the restoration market. Owners of those vehicles are frequently surprised at how cheap and quick the job is.

Low-volume models, imports that never sold in numbers, and anything with an unusual profile are a different matter. There the search can involve specialist suppliers, restoration parts vendors, and occasionally a blank that has to be adapted from a related profile by hand. A shop that works on older vehicles will know these channels; a shop that does not will simply tell you it cannot help, which is at least honest.

Three ways to make a key with no key

When nothing survives to copy, the mechanical trade has long-standing answers that predate every piece of software in a modern van.

Cutting to code. Every lock is manufactured to a code specifying the depth of each cut. On older vehicles that code is sometimes stamped on the lock cylinder itself, sometimes recorded on a metal tag supplied with the car, and sometimes retrievable from surviving records. Given the code, a key can be cut to the original specification without the vehicle being present at all.

Reading the lock. A technician removes a cylinder — commonly a door or boot lock, which is easier to extract than an ignition — and reads the wafer arrangement directly, then cuts a key to match. Slower, entirely reliable, and requires the shop to be comfortable disassembling old hardware without breaking it.

Impressioning. A blank is inserted, worked against the lock, and the marks left by the wafers are filed away in stages until the key operates. Why your car takes three different keys

Owners of older vehicles frequently discover that the ignition, the doors and the boot no longer share a key, and assume something is wrong. Nothing is.

Over decades, individual cylinders get replaced after damage, wear, theft attempts, or a previous owner losing one key of a set. Replacing one cylinder is cheap; re-keying every cylinder to match is a slightly larger job that few people bother with at the time. The result accumulates.

If a single key matters to you, a locksmith can usually re-key the cylinders back to one specification, and the sensible moment to do it is when you are having a key made anyway. A key that has turned an ignition every day for thirty years is not the shape it was when it was cut.

Copy that key and you reproduce the wear. Two questions sort it quickly. Ask whether the shop cuts to code, and ask whether it can originate a key by reading a cylinder or by impressioning. A shop that does both will answer without hesitation and will often be pleased to be asked, because this is the work many technicians enjoy most. A shop that does neither will tell you, and may well refer you to the person in your region who does.

The referral is worth pursuing. Before a restoration or a long storage

Two moments in an older vehicle's life are unusually good times to deal with keys, and both are easy to miss.

The first is during a restoration, while the car is apart. Lock cylinders are accessible, sometimes already removed, and a locksmith can read them, re-key them to a single specification and cut a matched set for a fraction of the effort the same work takes on an assembled car. The second is before long-term storage. A vehicle that sits for years tends to come out with a key nobody can find and paperwork nobody remembers filing.
