Broken Key in the Ignition or Door Lock: What to Do, and What Not to Do

Whether you can touch it comes down to one thing: can you see metal you could grip, or not.

The short answer. As of September 2026, a key that has snapped in a lock is two separate jobs and it matters which order they happen in: the broken piece has to come out of the cylinder without damaging it, and then a replacement key has to be cut — and, on anything built with an immobilizer, programmed to the vehicle [1]. Extraction is the urgent half and the half most amateur attempts make worse. If the blade is flush with the face of the lock or has gone below it, stop and call someone with extraction tools.

The good news, and it surprises people: the broken half still in your hand is valuable. Keep it. It carries the transponder chip on most keys and it gives a locksmith a cut to copy, which can make the replacement both cheaper and faster.

The distinction is not about difficulty, it is about damage. A cylinder is a stack of small spring-loaded wafers or pins in a precise alignment. A piece of metal pushed further in, or a wafer bent by a screwdriver, converts a straightforward extraction into a cylinder replacement — which on many vehicles also means re-keying the whole lock set or coding a new cylinder to the vehicle.

If the stub is protruding

There is a narrow, genuinely safe version of self-extraction, and a long list of ways to get it wrong.

What can work:

  • Fine needle-nose pliers, gripping the stub squarely and pulling straight out along the axis of the keyway. No twisting, no rocking side to side.
  • Patience with alignment. The lock has to be in exactly the position the key was in when it broke. If the cylinder has rotated even slightly, the wafers are no longer aligned to the keyway and nothing is coming out until it is returned to that position.
  • A drop of light lubricant, if you have it. Graphite or a lock-specific product. Not a thick oil and not a general-purpose penetrating spray, both of which attract grit and cause a slower failure later.

What reliably makes it worse:

  • Superglue on a matchstick or a wire. It is the most-recommended trick online and the most damaging: the glue bonds the fragment to the wafers as readily as to your improvised handle, and a cylinder glued internally is a replacement rather than a repair.
  • Anything pushed into the keyway past the fragment — a paperclip, a jigsaw blade, a screwdriver. The space behind the fragment is where the wafers live.
  • Turning the ignition with the fragment in it. If the vehicle starts, you now have a running car that cannot be locked, cannot be restarted, and may be stuck in a position that traps the steering lock.
  • Force of any kind. Keys break because they were already fatigued or because the lock was resisting; whatever stopped the key will still be there.

If two calm attempts with pliers do not move it, stop. The cost of extraction by someone with the right tools is very small next to the cost of a cylinder.

Why the key broke, and why that matters for what comes next

Keys do not break at random, and the cause predicts whether you are about to buy one key or a lock as well.

Metal fatigue. The usual culprit. Years of small flexing at the shoulder of the blade — the point where it meets the plastic head — work-harden the metal until it fractures. Often the key had been feeling slightly loose or the head had been flexing for weeks. This one is the key's fault alone, and a replacement resolves it.

A worn cylinder. A lock whose wafers and keyway have worn needs more turning force, and the key takes the strain. The tell is that the key had been getting stiffer, or worked only when jiggled, or worked better in the driver's door than the passenger door. A worn copy of a copy. A key duplicated from an already-worn key inherits its errors, and each generation is a slightly worse fit. Cutting a fresh key from the vehicle's key code rather than from a worn sample produces a better blade — one of the practical arguments in classic and older car key replacement.

Cold and leverage. Steel is more brittle when cold, and a frozen or stiff cylinder in winter demands more force at exactly the moment the metal tolerates least.

A key used as a tool. Opening packaging, prying a lid, turning a screw. It only takes one.

What a shop will actually do

Extraction uses thin, hooked or barbed tools designed to slip alongside the fragment, catch a cut, and draw it out with the wafers left undisturbed. A technician who does this regularly will usually clear a straightforward break in minutes, and the clean version of the job does no damage at all.

The replacement key is then the ordinary job, with one useful shortcut: if you kept the broken half, its cuts can be read directly, and on most keys the transponder chip inside the head is undamaged and can sometimes be transferred into a new blade. Whether that transfer is possible depends on the key type — it is routine on some remote-head and flip keys, impossible on others. Ask; it is not always volunteered.

The broken-in-a-door-lock version

A key snapped in a door lock rather than the ignition is less urgent in one sense — the vehicle may still start with a spare — and more awkward in another, because a damaged door cylinder on many vehicles is keyed to the same code as the ignition, so replacing it carelessly leaves you with two different keys for one car.

Two practical points:

  • You may be able to drive. If you have a working spare and the vehicle unlocks by remote, the extraction can be scheduled rather than emergency. That is a meaningfully cheaper conversation than a night callout, as emergency and after-hours car key replacement sets out.
  • Do not leave the fragment in. Water gets in around it, the cylinder corrodes, and a simple extraction becomes a replacement over a winter.

What it costs

Cost separates cleanly by which of the three situations you were in and whether you still hold a working key:

  • Extraction alone, with a spare in hand. The smallest job in this article — a short visit, no parts.

Because extraction is usually a small part of the total, the way to keep this job cheap is to protect the cylinder — which means not probing a flush or sunken fragment.

What to say when you call

Give five things and the shop can tell you what is coming before anyone drives out:

  1. Year, make and model.
  2. Whether the break is in the ignition or a door lock.
  3. Whether the stub is protruding, flush, or below the face.
  4. Whether you still have a working key or fob.
  5. Whether you still have the broken half in your hand.

Afterwards: the failure this predicts

A key that broke from fatigue is a warning about every other key on the vehicle of the same age. If the one that snapped was your only key, the replacement leaves you in exactly the position that made this expensive — one key, no margin.
